| “aS SaLaam Alaikum” or “Ya ali madad”? |
|
| The Muslims world over greet each other with
“As salaam Alaikum” i.e. “May (Allah’s) Peace be upon you”.
To which the normal response is
“Wa alaikum Salaam” i.e. “And upon you be (Allah’s) Peace”.
But not so the Ismailis!
Their greeting is “Ya Ali Madad” i.e. “Hadrat Ali’s help is nigh”.
To which the normal response is
“Mowla Ali Madad” i.e. “Our Lord Ali’s help is nigh”.Perhaps it is worth recalling the source of the Muslim Greeting.
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) (pbuh) said:
|
“Allah created Adam … He said to him, ‘Go and greet that group of angels sitting there, and listen what they will say in reply to you, for that will be your greeting and the greeting of your offspring.’
Adam (went and) said:
‘As Salamu ‘Alaikum (peace be upon you).’
They replied,
‘As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahamtullah (peace and Allah’s Mercy upon you)’.
So they increased by ‘wa Rahamtullah’ ….”

Allah says: |
“When those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs; signs; etc.) come to you, say:
Salamun Alaikum (peace be upon you); your Lord has written Mercy for Himself, so that if any of you does evil in ignorance, and thereafter repents and does righteous deeds (by obeying Allah), then surely He is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.” | | |
|
|
| “When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it (or at least) return it equally. Certainly, Allah is ever a Careful Account Taker of all things.” |
| |
“Verily, those who believe and do good deeds of righteousness, their Lord will guide them through their Faith; under them will flow rivers in the Garden of Delight.
Their way of request therein will be “Subhanaka Allahumma” (Glory to You, O Allah) and “Salam” will be their greetings therein and
the close of their request will be “Al-Hamdu Lillahi Rabbil-Alamin” (All the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds). |
|
|
“But those who believe and work righteousness will be admitted to the Gardens beneath which rivers flow – to dwell therein for ever with the leave of their Lord.
Their greeting therein will be: Peace!” |
|
|
| “They will not there hear any vain discourse, but only salutations of Peace: and they will have therein their sustenance, morning and evening.” |
| |
| “Their greeting on the Day they shall meet Him will be ‘Salam’ (Peace) and He has prepared for them a generous reward.” |
| |
“Verily, the dwellers of the Paradise, that Day, will be busy with joyful things.
They and their wives will be in pleasant shade reclining on thrones.
They will have therein fruits and all they ask for.
‘Salam’ – a Word from the Lord (Allah), Most Merciful.” |
